Overview of this work and its intended use This booklet presents four tables - one for each instrument in the modern family of bowed-string instruments – and indicates the types of strings available during a specific period. The strings are moreover indicated on the basis of their position on the instrument so as to rapidly illustrate what possible choice of set up there would be and to avoid historical misconceptions. By 'historical misconception' we mean a reference to combinations of strings that in past ages were never adopted within the same set up.
